What caught my attention in week twenty-three, 2023
In continuation to week twenty-two, here are a few thoughts and things that caught my attention in week twenty-three, 2023:
- π My wife and I went this weekend for the first time with our children and dog together on a two-day hike and slept in the tents we carried along. Among other things, we have been on the Briloner Kammweg and have enjoyed the scenery. We arrived with our dog by train. That was our dog's first longer train ride (in total over 4 h), partly in quite full trains. For the fact that she is quite a fearful dog in relation to strangers and tends to fear barking, it worked wonderfully. The hike itself was exhausting because it was hot, > 10 kg of luggage for everyone (but the youngest) to carry, quite long (about 20 km) and hilly (about 1000 meters of altitude) but also very nice. The overnight stay in the tent on a small platform for hikers was also new for our dog but she mastered sleeping in a tent excellently as well. On the second day we got home exhausted but happy.
- π₯Ύ In total, I walked 75 km and biked 51 km this week. I don't think that has ever happened before, that I walked more than I biked.
- π I followed an Apple WWDC keynote for the first in parallel to the live stream on Mastodon. The experience was definitely comparable to the years before on Twitter. New posts just flew by. All in all, of course, it was an extremely densely packed keynote with lots of news that was discussed in great detail on the relevant sites, channels and podcasts. I'm curious how this legal technology induced trip will differ from one with a substance with the sum formula C20H25N3O sometime next year or the year after that π .
- π And of course I watched The Talk Show Live From WWDC 2023. I am aware that this is ultimately a highly professionally choreographed marketing event for Apple, but nonetheless, the Apple employees involved come across quite likeable. It is truly refreshing to listen to them compared to all those other CEOs who consider themselves unnaturally important.
- Apropos, after twitter, raindrop.io, reddit, pinboard, apparently lemmy is also run by people with very strange beliefs. Oh dear πΏ.
- And speaking of lemmy, kbin seems another service to explore. Phew, this is all getting way too exhausting for me π .
- π¦ I could be wrong, but I think both games were ADA winners and look really interesting: Endling and Afterplace.
- π¨βπ» Christopher Lawley released two new videos covering Amazing Mac Apps Vol. 1 and Incredible Mac Apps Vol. 2.
- Among them Hyperkey: The extra macOS modifier key. It converts "the caps lock key or any modifier key to the hyper key, all four modifiers combined: ββ₯ββ§. The hyper key acts as an additional modifier key that you can use in any app with keyboard shortcuts." How amazing is this?
- πͺ There is a new video converter, Nibbles. "Convert videos offline with Nibbles, supporting formats like GIF, MP4, animated WEBP, APNG, and MOV. Benefit from on-device processing, no internet connection, small file size, and privacy as your data stays on your device." It's a free app made by Christian Konrad and he has another interesting one in the MAS:
- βHokusFokus. "HokusFokus helps you focus better on a single task. [...] A semi-transparent overlay lets all distractions fade into the background, leaving the active window in the spotlight." As a SetApp subscriber I am a Haze over user but HokusFokus seems to be a nice alternative.
- π¨βπ» Not for me personally, but a nice idea, βGlide - Focus Pointer. "βGlide is a focus pointer which dims parts of your screen for better focus and reading experience."
- βοΈ Actions for Obsidian for iOS was released by Carlo Zottmann and I bought it in combination with the macOS version. I was playing a little bit around with it and managed to let it generate a toot list in combination with Re:Toot, a list of youtube videos saved in Play and links saved in Anybox for my Daily Notes page in Obsidian. Still a little polishing to be done but I am very happy about the Shortcuts so far.1
- πΉ This post from Didier Malenfant reminded me of my old AMIGA days. Oh, how I loved those computers. We were really deep in the scene back then and had our own BBS that distributed 0-day releases of the demo scene in GER. I still have hundreds of old 3.5" floppy disks with demos and an old Amiga 1200 somewhere. But I would assume, that they don't work anymore. I'm seriously thinking about saving up for an Analogue Pocket to use AmigaVision among other things on it. Have read only good things about the device so far.
- π¨ For the Playdate I bought Personal SAM-Y by Scenic Route Software and Shift.
- βοΈ I've disabled cross posting to Bluesky, because I don't even look in there anymore at the moment.2
- πΏ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023): I'm getting too old for that, too; but the whole family didn't really like it much.
