What caught my attention in week sixteen, 2023
In continuation to week fifteen, here are a few things that caught my attention in week sixteen, 2023:
- 😡 During the week I was mainly in a very, very bad mood and this mostly at work. No idea if I should sit this out or if I need to change something.
- 🚵♀️ Aside from the hay fever, it was nice to finally see blossoming trees and flowers outside and even the sun for a change. My wife and I took advantage of the weather to cycle to a reading in Fulda, 100 km away, to which I had been given tickets to for my birthday. Thanks to pretty strong wind, the trip was a little more cumbersome than hoped, but it was two very nice days. ☀️
- 🎥 Matt Birchler (@matt@isfeeling.social) updated his Quick Reviews to version 2.0, a nice website project you can use to generate a review, e.g. for a movie, and post it to the social media site you prefer. If you want to generate a Markdown link instead you can use Lantern: Post Post movie, TV, and game reviews to Micro.blog by Robb Knight (@robb@social.lol). It "uses the Movie DB and GiantBomb to get images and release years for games, TV, and movies." (Of course it works fine for other sites than MB as well.)
- 💩 The Oatmeal released A Little Wordy a "Daily Word Guesser".
- 💻 It was Automation April Shortcuts Contest over at MacStories and just in time
- LaunchBar was updated with some improvements to its Shortcuts support,
- Bike gained Shortcuts support and Brett Terpstra released Markdown to Bike conversion, which has nothing to do with Shortcuts but with Bike. 😇
- 📱 Albums: Music Shortcuts isn't related to Apple's Shortcuts app either, but "lets you collect and add your favourite music albums as widgets to your home screen, acting as fast shortcuts to listen to them on your preferred music streaming service."
- ⌨️ Siracusa had complained about it, and I don't know if the keyboard for navigating URLs in Safari's text field was designed with that in mind or pure coincidence2, but it actually serves that purpose perfectly. I was able to participate in the iOS Testflight of URL Quick Keyboard and find it very useful. It can be bought in the App Store.
- 🤖 Okay, I would never be insane enough to run this on my computer, nor do I have the ability to try this isolated in a VM. But if you are crazy enough to let an LLM take over your computer completely, you can try Auto-GPT
- 🤔 Gruber linked to Humane's AI-Powered Wearable, which looks like a nice technical gimmick. But I can't really imagine not wanting to look at a high-resolution screen at some point in the future. Unless something is projected directly in front of or into my eyes, but then I won't need that thing either.
- ⌨️ Typinator types text for you, "insert words, sentences, or even entire paragraphs by just typing a few characters". I've mentioned it a few times in the past, I couldn't live without it on a Mac1. I bought the last major release almost four years ago and was very happy to pay the update fee to 9.0 (more or less just for a new UI).
- 👨🏫 iA Presenter seems to be "a fresh, fast and fun way to create and hold presentations" and should be out soon.
- 💻 A new version of OnlySwitch was released on GitHub. "OnlySwitch provides a series of toggle switches to simplify your routine work, such as Hidden desktop icons, dark mode, and hide notch of the new Macbook Pro." And if you're only interest in getting rid of your Desktop's clutter, you can use Backdrop X: "Backdrop X is a recreation of my 1990's shareware app Backdrop! It doesn't do anything but display your selected wallpaper in a window that covers your desktop."
- 📸 There is "Yet another Make Beautiful Screenshots app" for macOS: Splendidis.
- 🖊️ The Magic Highlighter (Appstore): "a Safari Extension for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that automatically highlights search terms and phrases on search result web pages."
- ❤️ Heart Analyzer: Cardio Monitor was updated and is a great way to visualize Apple Watch Health data.
- 🐘 To clean up some your Mastodon follower list, you can use Topiary: trim your followers: "With Topiary, you can filter the accounts you follow based on their posting activity. If an account has been abandoned, you can make the choice to unfollow and reduce that clutter."
- 🥧 I've learned from Natasha Nox (@Natanox@chaos.social) about alternatives to Raspberry Pis and why the latter may not be the first choice to buy.
- 😅 I've finally updated our Homekit installation to the new architecture. It seems like all went smoothly.
- 📺 Watched the last two episodes of Ted Lasso and finished Season 3 of The Mandalorian together with my wife and my sons. Ted Lasso S03E06 was so great! 🌻🌷
- 🎙 Das Klima: DK084 - Ein Lob der Pilze, Hemispheric Views: 082: A Hacker Has Entered the Chat!, Launched: 60: Petey - Hidde van der Ploeg, Playdate Podcast: A Love Letter to Video Games, The Changelog: Software Development, Open Source: LLMs break the internet, Übermedien: Holger ruft an … wegen Döpfners Nachrichten
- 🥰 The Love Letter to Video Games was great and of course Hemispheric Views as always.
- Sorry, @Jason@social.lol, I am sure for corporations and teams TextExpander is better suited but for me personally, I prefer not subscribing to an app like this 😇↩︎
- It looks like it was created in response to the post.↩︎
